After correctly applying the sealer, expect to have between 3-5 years protection*. Sealer longevity will vary dependent on a number of factors such as: traffic (foot/vehicle), weather and general maintenance.
Recommended coverage
First coat: 2.0sq. metres per litre
Second coat: 3.5sq metres per litre
Application
Smartseal Block Paving sealer can be applied using a sprayer unit or roller, at a rate of 2.0m2 per litre (pavers) 1st coat & 3.5 m2 per litre 2nd coat. A two-coat spray application is required to fully cover the jointing sand. The sealer will be tack free within 2 hours at 20°C and foot traffic may be permitted after 4 hours. Vehicles should be kept off the sealed area for a minimum of 24 hours at 20°C. These times may be increased or reduced depending on the ambient temperature. During the curing cycle, protect from rain. Do not apply when the ground temperature is above 23°C or below 12°C. All equipment should be cleaned with Smartseal cleaner fluid after use.
Deicing salts should not be applied directly on Smartseal block paving or concrete sealers. Salt chemically reduces the temperature at which water freezes and will result in water ingress into the concrete. Subsequent freezing may result in the concrete seal being broken by the expansion of water as it freezes and white pitted areas may become visible.
NOT TO BE USED ON CLAY PAVERS

Preparation
New block paving or cobble stone paving should be swept clean, ensuring there is sufficient well-compacted sand in the joints. Existing paving should be pressure washed to remove all surface debris. If the area is contaminated with weeds & moss then it should be treated with Smartseal Fungicidal Wash. Oil and other stains should be removed using Smartseal Cleaner / Oil Remover. The treated area should then be left to dry and the joints re-sanded & compacted to the lower edge of the paver chamfers with clean kiln-dried sand. Moisture in the paver & sand will inhibit penetration of the sealer and produce whiteness.
Technical & Test Data
Smartseal Block Paving sealer has been tested by the TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) and certified that it meets the SRV (Skid Resistance Value) for all categories of paving for local authority pedestrian areas and when heavily trafficked is suitable for special applications where risks of skidding are high as laid down in the UK Highway Authorities Tender Specification. Copies available on request.

Q: How do I clean the sprayer and tools after using SMARTSEAL block paving sealer?
A: The sprayer should be flushed through with the tools cleaning fluid in between coatings and after you have finished. This will enable you to use the sprayer over and over again.
Q: Once i've applied the sealant, for maintenance how regularly should i clean the block paving, which product do I clean the paving with and by which method? Hopefully you can recommend a cleaner for safe cleaning?..and would it be safe to wash the cleaner off using a pressure washer or something more gentle like hose with a jet spray attachment? With a sealed drive is it safe to brush the paving regularly to remove leaves or to brush in kiln sand to top up in-between the paving joints?
A: Once sealed and water resistant, the blocks will become semi 'self cleaning' as without moisture in the blocks, the dirty looking algae will not form on the surface. The joints between the blocks would ideally be swept clean now and again to stop muck building up in the joints, which would eventually turn into moss. An occassional treatment with diluted 'Green Clear' biocide will keep any algae that forms in shady areas at bay. If required, the blocks could be jet washed, without damaging the sealer. Hope that helps.
Q: Do I necessarily need to fill the paver joins with new sand before sealing? The block paving is clean and has some sand inbetween but I want to get it sealed before the weather changes and then top up with sand during the next dry spell (which could be weeks away!) I'm aiming to have the pavers looking nice rather than having solidified sand inbetween. Also would applying sealant now cause a barrier or prevent the next lot of sand getting into the joins?
A: Please see our 'how to ' guides on YouTube. The joints should be properly cleaned before applying the sealer and need to be filled with kiln dried sand otherwise weeds will ready form in the exposed joints. Hope that helps.

I decided to do my block paving myself after 3 (count them, 3) 'professionals' failed to do it properly, the latest one charging me around 1,700 (there's a lot of driveway) and within 2 months stuff was growing between the cracks again. For couple of weeks work and a 25 litre barrel of SmartSeal costing a mere 145 I've got the section of block paving between my shed and kitchen window looking like a million bucks with all the sand between the blocks as hard as a rock. Nothing is growing in there. Just make sure you follow the tutorial videos to the letter, make sure everything is prepped and make sure it's bone dry before you put the sealer down if you want it to perform at it's best. I had a feeling as soon as I found the SmartSeal website that this was going to be an absolute winner and for me it has been. 5 stars. Now back to using the other 75 litres I've got to lay down.
Does what it says on the tin, superb finish/ceiled between all block paving joints/with a tough finish, the wife liked the product smell (which did fade away on drying), best use pressure washer for best surface cleaning before application, many paving cleaners do not get the same result, especially on older block paving, I tested between joints with a flat piece of metal, and could feel the solution had gone hard, only "wobble" was I could not find info on tin as how to clean application brush, it went rock hard (if left too long between applications) anyway proves solution dried very well,
I received my sample of your block paving sealer and when I tried it I was amazed because it is exactly what I have been looking for. I have tried many other sealers which were no good. I cannot wait for my order to come to get started. Thank you so much.
